What Is a Favicon?

A favicon (short for "favorite icon") is the small icon displayed in browser tabs, bookmark lists, and mobile home screens next to your website's name. It's one of the first visual branding elements visitors notice and plays a key role in site recognition.

Modern browsers and devices expect favicons in multiple sizes — from 16×16 pixels for browser tabs to 512×512 for Progressive Web App splash screens. Providing the right set of sizes ensures your icon looks crisp on every device and context.

How Our Favicon Generator Works

CheckTown's favicon generator runs entirely in your browser — no files are uploaded to any server:

  • Upload any image (JPEG, PNG, or WebP) — ideally a square logo or icon — via drag-and-drop or file picker
  • The tool generates all standard sizes (16×16, 32×32, 48×48, 64×64, 128×128, 192×192, 256×256, 512×512) as PNG files
  • Copy the ready-to-use HTML and web manifest snippets, then download individual sizes or all at once

When To Use a Favicon Generator

Every website needs favicons, and generating them properly matters in several contexts:

  • New website launch — generate all required sizes from a single source image so your brand appears correctly in tabs, bookmarks, and PWA installs
  • Rebranding — when your logo changes, regenerate the full favicon set to update all touchpoints consistently
  • PWA development — Progressive Web Apps require 192×192 and 512×512 icons in the web manifest for install prompts and splash screens

Frequently Asked Questions

What image should I use as the source?

Use a square image (1:1 ratio) with a simple, recognizable design. Complex logos with fine text may be unreadable at 16×16. A minimal icon or lettermark works best. PNG with transparency is ideal.

Do I need all the generated sizes?

At minimum you need 16×16 and 32×32 for browser tabs, plus 180×180 for Apple Touch Icon and 192×192 + 512×512 for PWA manifests. The other sizes improve compatibility across different browsers and devices.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. All resizing and processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device.
